'Hybrid' Charter Schools on the Rise

While the setting evokes an older era, the San Francisco Flex Academy charter school is thoroughly modern. Though the students attend school every day, their courses are offered through an online curriculum accessed through students’ laptop computers. But Flex Academy also has teachers of core subjects—English, history, math, and science—on site, who meet with small groups of students throughout the day to troubleshoot areas where students are lagging, based on information collected by online assessments.

"Virtual School" in Lodi Lets Students Study from Home

Instead of struggling in the classroom, Shea does her work at her own pace, in the comfort of her home.  Her mom says the change has made a huge difference for their family. Over 4 million K-12 students took at least one online course in 2010, according to Ambient Insight, and this space is growing now by a five-year compound annual growth rate of 43 percent—much faster than the growth of charter schooling or other K-12 education reforms, for example.

        Las Vegas teacher takes to Facebook to get message out about fighting back against cuts to Nevada education

        Besides being a teacher and a father of four daughters, Mark Jimenez is trying to save funding for education in Nevada. Jimenez started a Facebook group, Nevadans for Funding Education in Nevada, to rally support for his cause, which he said should be everyone's cause.
